Woo - I'm up to last Thursday. 1.21 Gigawatts of time travel goin on here...
Reading for January 7
Genesis 16:1-18:15
This section is the story of Sarah (Sarai) and Abram (Abraham) - both of their names were chaged after God promised to give them a son. Sarah - who was infertile - initially told Abraham to sleep with her servant so they could have a child. This led to intense jealousy from Sarah and her servant ended up running away, only to meet God and come back.
After God promises Abraham to give Sarah a son he shows up in the form of three men. This is very cool imagery here - The trinity of God is shown through various clues in the Old Testament. I wonder if this was retroactively written after the the Trinity was revealed in the New Testament...I would hope not, just thinking empirically here...
There's also a really funny scene here. Sarah hears that she is having a son at the age of 90. So she, as we all would, laughs. God hears her laughing and calls here out on it:
"15 Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, 'I didn't laugh.'
But the LORD said, 'No, you did laugh."
I just find this funny. God talking to someone saying - "Nuh Uh!" Haha. Good times.
Matthew 6:1-24
There is so much wisdom in this passage, I'm surprised its not in Proverbs. Although, who knows - maybe it is. This was my favorite line out of the whole section though:
"Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will be."
Psalm 7:1-17
The more I read these, the more I am convinced that these should not be taken as examples of how to live, but more insight into someone in intense mental anguish. He commands God to "rise in Anger...wake, my God and bring justice!" It seems like God is leaving him high and dry here, for a lesson I hope to see as I continue to read...David's situation does not seem to be improving based on the fact that the pain he expresses seems to get worse and worse with each passing psalm.
Proverbs 2:1-5
"Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it is to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God."
This is how I should be reading. I need to take my time and research things I don't understand.
SEVEN!
