Reading for September 1

Job 40:1-42:17

Sweet, this is the end of Job. Before I get into the content, I want to mention that this has been the most interesting book of the Bible so far. You really get a sense of a few aspects of God that aren't present anywhere else in the Bible. And you see a main character in the Bible - a character with a book named after him - completely badmouthing God. It's so unique, and I found myself often wondering how this book got cannonized.

Wow. So it turns out that Job was right all along. So this reading continues God's rebuke of Job, asking him if Job has experienced or done things that clearly only God could ever do. Job apologizes for him speaking out of place and talking about thing "too wonderful" for him.

But then God condemns Job's three friends for speaking inaccurately about him, saying that Job spoke truthfully about him. Which means that everything Job said about God is true. Pretty scary. BUT! Then God restores everything to Job. His fortune, his health, his livestock, his friends. He even gives him ten more children. It says that he had double what he had before God unleashed his fury on him.

I'm not sure how I feel about this ending. What's the lesson here? Complain against God about your loss and then get double what you had? That doesn't seem right. Also, just from a storytelling standpoint, everything is wrapped up in a neat little bow so its all "happily ever after". Just a little lame is all. I think my main takeaway from this is that no one should be afraid to speak plainly about God. If you're having a hard time, or feel that God is treating you unfairly - say something. Speak out against him. Don't sugarcoat your situation and say "Oh, it will al be ok." No! Say, "God, this sucks. What the hell? Why are you treaing me this way?" You may not get double the blessings, but it will be real faith and a real, honest relationship with our Lord.

2 Corinthians 5:11-21
14For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
I think when Paul says we should live for him, that also means living for others. Denying oneself and building up others. Live this way and see how your community or family changes.

Psalm 45:1-17
Eh...nothin really exciting in this one.

14 The mouth of an adulteress is a deep pit;
he who is under the LORD's wrath will fall into it.

Sweet, yo.
