This Week's Challenge

Hug somebody who needs it.

Reading from Wednesday, June 2

Hey yo. No official good news yet, hopefully tomorrow.

Can I admit something though? I love Owl City. I understand why it's not cool to like him. It's wimpy, it's cliche, its extremely similar to Postal Service, there's very little in the way of musicality, but I am the biggest sucker for a good melody, and this guy has it in spades. Plus I love that techno-pop stuff.

Reading for June 2
2 Samuel 19:11-20:13
There is way too much going on here. What I can gather is that David's power is once again being threatened by some guy named Sheba. And once again all of Israel is divided into people of Judah (David's tribe) and people of non-Judah. So now I'm trying to piece together this last section. There's a guy named Amasa. David asks Amasa to gather all of Judah to fight in three days. It take Amasa longer than was requested. So then Joab, David's army commander, cuts Amasa's stomach open, literally spills his guts on the road and just leaves him there to die. Didn't God say something about there being issues if he allowed Israel to become a Monarchy?

John 21:1-25

Here's a pretty famous scene that I thought occurred before Jesus' death and resurrection, but here it is - right after it.

So the disciples are out fishing all morning and don't catch anything. Jesus appears at the shore and tells them to throw their net on the other side of the boat. They catch so many fish that they cannot pull the net up. It says that they caught 153 fish. I think there is a lot of significance around that number, Christian did a sermon on it a while ago, I think. Let me see what I can find...OK, nothing significant. It's almost like the numbers on lost - 4815162342. No concrete answer is given, but its interesting to think about. I need to dig up that sermon and see what Christian said about it.

The second part of this section of text is Jesus reinstating Peter as the cornerstone of this new religion. He asks Peter three times if he loves him. All three times, Peter says "Of course" And each time, Jesus responds by giving Peter a command: Feed my lambs, take care of my sheep, feed my sheep. It kinda sounds like he's saying the same thing three times, but Jesus does like to do that. I think this command is meant to extend to all of us too. As he commanded earlier in the story, "love one another". So now he's saying "If you love me, take care of others." So those who claim to be followers of Christ and go out with messages of hate an intolerance, take notice - this is not what Jesus wanted from you. =

Psalm 120:1-7

So as I'm reading the story of David, the psalms are starting to make more sense. He had lost all of his children, he was kicked out of his home twice, his sons betrayed him - he had a pretty bad go of it. This one doesn't say it was written by David, but it sure carries his style:
 6 Too long have I lived
       among those who hate peace.
 7 I am a man of peace;
       but when I speak, they are for war.
 Proverbs 16:16-17
 16 How much better to get wisdom than gold,
       to choose understanding rather than silver!
 17 The highway of the upright avoids evil;
       he who guards his way guards his life.

Alright bros. Have a good night.

  1. Christian said there's no consensus on the meaning of 153, but one possible reason is that there were 153 known species of fish at the time.

    Meaning that John is saying that Jesus' followers are meant to be "fishers of men" to all people of all races of all walks of life.
